Taking Action Against Plastic Pollution: A Journey to Capitol Hill

Plastic pollution is a pressing global issue that demands our immediate attention. The creation of plastic not only contributes to climate change and depletes finite resources, but it also inflicts severe harm on frontline communities residing near petrochemical plants, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. Despite its durability, plastic is tragically perceived as disposable, leading to staggering amounts of waste that persist in our environment for up to 450 years. Moreover, the false narrative propagated by the industry, which claims that plastic is recyclable, has deceived us all. In reality, less than 5% of plastic is actually recycled, leaving the majority to choke our waterways, accumulate in floating islands within our oceans, and wreak havoc on marine life. Even the so-called "chemical recycling" or incineration of plastic fails to offer a viable solution, as it releases toxic pollutants into the air, exacerbating environmental and public health concerns. It is imperative that we recognize the detrimental consequences of plastic pollution and work collectively to implement sustainable alternatives that prioritize the well-being of our planet and all living beings.

It's so inspiring to see people from all over the country coming together to fight plastic pollution! As an ocean activist, I was fortunate enough to travel to Washington, D.C., and talk to Congress about the urgent need to address this issue. This was part of the “Capitol Hill Week of Action,” which had members from Oceana, Break Free from Plastic, Surfrider Foundation, 5Gyres, Only One, NRDC, Center for Biological Diversity, Plastic Pollution Coalition, Sierra Club, and other organizations working to tackle plastic pollution.

In this post, I'll share my experience and the goals we set during our Week of Action, and how you can take action!

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act (BFFPPA):

One of the key focuses of our lobbying efforts was the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act (BFFPPA). This comprehensive bill aims to reduce plastic pollution throughout the entire lifecycle of the material, from its source to waste. With the support of numerous Congressional champions, we worked tirelessly to secure additional cosponsors for this crucial legislation.

Anticipated Bills and Priorities:

During our time in D.C., we also discussed upcoming bills that will further address plastic pollution. Among these anticipated bills are the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act, Reducing Waste in National Parks Act, and the Protecting Communities from Plastics Act. We aimed to generate awareness of these bills and garner support from decision-makers to ensure their introduction and passage.

Goals of the Week of Action:

Our Week of Action had several important objectives. Firstly, we wanted to bring attention to the issues of plastic pollution and stress the importance of taking action. Additionally, we aimed to find new original cosponsors for the Reducing Waste in National Parks Act, a crucial step in protecting our natural wonders. We also worked towards gathering co-signers for a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Congressman Lloyd Doggett and Senator Jeff Merkley, expressing our concerns about the EPA's draft National Strategy for Reducing Plastic Pollution. Moreover, our goal was to enlighten decision-makers about the impact of plastic pollution and cultivate new champions within Congress and the Biden Administration. Thanks for being part of this important movement!

The Journey:

Walking through the halls of Congress, meeting with lawmakers, and sharing stories of the devastating effects of plastic pollution was truly empowering and humbling. It was truly inspiring to see how many representatives were receptive to our cause and committed to finding sustainable solutions.

We engaged in productive discussions, highlighting the urgency of the issue and the importance of immediate action. As an ocean activist, I have always believed in the power of collective action. I shared stories about our Surfrider Foundation beach cleanups and emphasized that the overwhelming consensus is that we clearly cannot clean our way out of this crisis. Additionally, I expressed my fears and concerns about the toxins within plastic, such as PFAs, that have been linked to cancer, PCOS, and infertility in women.

Lobbying Congress was an incredible opportunity to amplify our voices and make a tangible impact on national policies. By advocating for plastic reduction priorities, we aimed to protect the environment, wildlife, and the health of our communities. After hearing the stories of the tireless work from these activists, I am encouraged that no matter how defeating it can be at times, we must not give up hope.

Your Turn!

I urge all of you to make your voices heard and take action against plastic pollution. One of the most impactful ways to initiate change is by contacting your state representatives and senators, urging them to prioritize and take immediate action on this issue. Your voice matters, and by expressing your concerns, you can help shape legislation and policies that combat plastic pollution. Additionally, I encourage you to consider joining environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as a volunteer. By becoming an active participant in these organizations, you can contribute to the movement on a regular basis and be part of a passionate community dedicated to environmental preservation. Together, we can create a powerful force for change and work towards a future free from the grasp of plastic pollution!

Subject: Urgent Action Needed to Address Plastic Pollution

Dear [Elected Officials’ Name],

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to urgently bring your attention to the pressing issue of plastic pollution and to urge you to take immediate action in support of comprehensive legislation to address this environmental crisis.

Plastic pollution has reached alarming levels, causing irreparable harm to our ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. As a concerned citizen and advocate for a sustainable future, I believe it is crucial that we address this issue with urgency and determination.

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act (BFFPPA) is a vital piece of legislation that seeks to reduce the production and use of single-use plastic products and packaging, while improving the responsibility of producers in the design, collection, reuse, and disposal of their consumer products. By preventing pollution from entering our food chains, waterways, and natural habitats, this act is a critical step towards a cleaner, healthier environment for all.

However, it is disheartening to learn that special interests, particularly those in the petrochemical and plastic production industry, are actively opposing the BFFPPA. These industry efforts to increase the production of single-use plastics and scale up waste management technologies, without adequate regulatory oversight, exacerbate the harm caused to local waterways, frontline communities, oceans, public health, climate, and wildlife.

In light of this urgent situation, I implore you to use your position of influence to champion the cause of reducing plastic pollution. I urge you to:

  1. Co-sponsor and support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act and other forthcoming bills aimed at curbing plastic pollution.

  2. Join efforts to secure new original co-sponsors for the Reducing Waste in National Parks Act.

  3. Co-sign the letter led by Congressman Llyod Doggett and Senator Jeff Merkley, expressing concerns about the Environmental Protection Agency's draft National Strategy for Reducing Plastic Pollution.

  4. Raise awareness about the devastating impact of plastic pollution, both among your colleagues in Congress and within your district.

Together, we can make a significant difference in tackling plastic pollution and securing a sustainable future for our communities. By taking immediate action, you will not only protect our environment and wildlife but also demonstrate your commitment to public health and the well-being of your constituents.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I trust in your leadership and dedication to serving the best interests of our community and the planet. I am hopeful that you will take the necessary steps to address plastic pollution promptly and decisively.

I look forward to hearing about your actions on this matter and the progress made in reducing plastic pollution in our district and beyond.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
