Four Sustainable Things I Keep in My Shower

Thank you to Spring & Vine for sponsoring this post. All opinions expressed are my own!

As I continue to create a sustainable lifestyle, I try to reduce plastic from my life as much as possible. According to Zero Waste Home, our bathrooms are the second most wasteful rooms in our homes (after the kitchen), so I started to take an audit of the single-use items I was using and how to replace them with more sustainable, reusable items.

After trial and error of finding out what works and what doesn’t, I’ve found that less is actually more, and by going back to the basics, we can not only reduce our plastic + waste, but also reduce how much we spend on personal care products.

So, here are the four sustainable things I keep in my shower.

Four Sustainable Things I Keep in My Shower:

  1. Spring & Vine Shampoo Bar

  2. Bar Soap

  3. Safety Razor with Refillable Blades

  4. Natural Loofah

I remember when I first heard about shampoo bars, I was like, “HUH?” 🤔 But then someone broke it down for me about how much water is in our everyday personal care products, so I was like, “DUH!” 🤯

There are tons of reasons why Spring & Vine shampoo bars are rad, but here are my top four:

  1. Less Plastic

    1. First and foremost, using a shampoo bar means less plastic - yew! Say bye to those bulky plastic shampoo + conditioner bottles. Spring & Vine comes in these rad little cardboard boxes that are both compostable and recyclable. They use up to 95% less plastic than traditional shampoos and conditioners. Note: there’s a small plastic wrap on the bar for quality control to keep it fresh.

  2. Less Water

    1. Now this might sound weird, but have you ever thought about how much our products (everything from shampoo to laundry detergent) come in these bulky, heavy bottles, because they’re made with so much water? You may have seen cleaning powder that you dissolve in a spray bottle, and shampoo bars are kind of the same thing. They’re a concentrated version of shampoo, which means 90% less water in the product, which means less weight, which means less energy + resources to get it to you!

  3. Clean Ingredients

    1. In all honesty, I used to not be too aware about the ingredients of the products I was using. I think I was more concerned about what it was packaged in than about what I was putting on my body. But now as I get older, I’m super conscious of what I’m putting on (and in) my body. Spring & Vine is made with shea butter essential oils and is free of sulfates, parabens, silicones, dyes, phthalates, mineral oils and synthetic fragrances.

  4. No Residue

    1. This is a BIG ONE for me. I’m really active, so I tend to have pretty oily hair… so I want an effective shampoo that can get all of that dirt, sweat, and saltwater out of my hair. Some shampoos either leech your hair of all your healthy oils and leave you with super dry, hay-like hair… and some feel like they only add more oil to your hair and leave a funky residue. (Honestly, I think the residue is the main reason why more folks don’t use a shampoo bar to begin with.) But my new Spring & Vine shampoo bar left ZERO RESIDUE! Check out this video to see how clean, soft, and full my Scalp Soothing Tea Tree & Mint Spring & Vine shampoo bar left my hair feeling after my first wash.
